Gustave Marmuse
An exceptionally rare find on the antique jewelry market from the Second Empire period. Three small old cut diamonds adorn an extremely intricate design supported by two winged mythical creatures – Griffins. Since the motif's inception, Greek and Roman mythology has associated griffins with gold and treasure. Symbolism attributed many virtues to these creatures: courage, perseverance, speed, strength and vigilance.
The brooch bears the Paris hallamrks of the period 1847-1887 and the signature of the French master silver and gold worker Gustav Marmuse, who had a particular fondness for Second Empire style designs. The goldsmith's workshop and showroom was located in Paris at 26 Rue du Bac.
